Does Canned Tuna Have Worms? May be, Here’s What to do

Most of the living organisms that humans consume can have parasites. This list also includes fish. The parasites in raw fish can be killed by heating during cooking and freezing.

These methods are also effective in killing any bacteria in the fish. Tuna that is canned is treated and processed correctly before it’s packaged.

Canned tuna is cooked and processed up to the standards of commercial sterility. This allows for the destruction of parasites.

If your canned tuna contains a worm, there is no need to worry about it. Canned foods contain preservatives that allow the food to be safe for consumption for a long time.

Therefore, spotting a worm inside your canned tuna doesn’t make it unsafe for eating. As long as the tuna is cooked and preserved properly, there is a negligible chance of the dead parasite infecting you.

Parasites are harmful when they are alive and can infect humans. Canned tuna is cooked and treated with preservatives; therefore, there is no need to worry about the chance of getting infected by such worms.

However, if you find a worm in raw tuna sushi or sashimi, your chances of infection are greater.

Make sure you eat raw tuna only from highly reputable places and follow the cooking and freezing standards set by the FDA. We have written an article on ‘does tuna have parasites‘ Check it out.
