Can You Eat Raw Oysters from the Grocery Store? Not Always, Here’s Why

Raw oysters are typically freshly killed or still alive when served to you.

However, there is a misconception that keeping oysters alive for a long time makes them safer to be consumed.

But you don’t need to worry as it’s implausible to die from eating a bad oyster.

The raw oysters served on ice with a side of lemon are alive when you consume them. Generally, raw oysters that die before being eaten are not safe to eat anymore.

That is because when a raw oyster dies, it becomes a breeding ground for a host of bacteria and other dangerous microorganisms.

Raw oysters probably die when they are shucked. When you shuck a raw oyster, you remove its shell to reveal the meat inside.

Shucked raw oysters are usually served on ice, just like the live ones. Raw oysters are best for consumption when they are freshly shucked or served alive on ice.

Experts suggest never to eat pre-shucked oysters from any grocery store raw. If you buy pre-shucked oysters from a grocery store, you should never eat them raw.

Pre-shucked oysters from grocery stores should always be cooked properly before consumption.

However, if the raw oysters are bought fresh, store them in ice and consume them within one day after they’re shucked.

If you come across any oyster with a damaged outer shell, discard it for your safety. A damaged shell indicates the oyster is dead.

Fresh oysters should be refrigerated for no longer than two days. The oysters should be eaten within 1-2 days for maximum flavor and umami.

Before refrigerating, ensure your refrigerator thermometer is accurate, as any temperature below 35 degrees kills shellfish.

In conclusion, any meat bought from the grocery store should not be eaten raw. Raw oysters from the grocery store should be cooked properly before being consumed.

Raw oysters are safe to eat when served alive on ice or freshly shucked. Oysters that are caught fresh should be refrigerated no more than two days or consumed within a day after the shell is removed.
