This service began as UberFRESH in Santa Monica, California. However, the service was rebranded as Uber Eats in the year 2015.

This is also the year the service was separated from its parent app and launched as a distinct application for mobile users. Uber Eats was launched in 2016 in London.

Initially, Uber Eats’ delivery fee was flat $4.99. After a few changes, Uber Eats started calculating its rates on the basis of the delivery distance.

The delivery charges of Uber Eats generally range from $2 to $8 now. However, in countries such as the UK and Ireland, the delivery rate depends on the worth of the order.

Uber Eats took the initiative to decrease the fee from 35 percent of the order and bring it down to 30 percent value of the order in February 2019.

The company also decided to launch virtual restaurants in the UK as part of its expansion project. These are sometimes referred to as cloud kitchens or cloud restaurants.

The purpose of such places is to prepare food for different brick-and-mortar restaurant places that intend to move their business to other places.

These kitchens also offer services for places that do not provide in-door dining. The company decided to expand its services to the European market in November 2018.

In India, Zomato announced that it would take over all business related to Uber Eats on January 21, 2020.

The deal’s condition was that Uber will own 10 percent stock of Zomato and as a result, would take over all the users of the Uber Eats application in India. When the deal was made, Zomato’s worth was around $3.55 billion.

Uber Eats had to let go of the delivery rights it had acquired for McDonald’s in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2020.

That is because the delivery rights were given to a British-based food delivery app service called Just Eat. However, Uber Eats still possesses the delivery rights of McDonald’s in the United States.

Uber Eats was able to witness a 30 percent increase in the form of an onslaught of new customers in March 2020 during the time when people were encouraged to maintain social distance on most occasions.

Uber Eats resigned from the food delivery industry in the United Arab Emirates on May 4, 2020. This position was given to the Dubai-based company known as Careem.
